What I Learned from the Movie "Guru" (2007) – A Simple Take by an MBA Student

Last night, I watched the movie Guru (2007) as part of our marketing assignment. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from an old Bollywood film, but by the end of it, I was both inspired and curious. The movie is based on the journey of a man named Gurukant Desai, played by Abhishek Bachchan, who rises from a small village to become a top business tycoon in India.

Here are my simple takeaways and learnings from the movie:

 1. Dream Big, Start Small Guru starts with nothing. No rich family. No MBA degree. But he has big dreams. This reminded me that anyone can rise if they have strong willpower and confidence. He believed in himself when no one else did.

 2. Business is About Solving Problems Guru didn't just sell products—he saw what people needed. He wanted to create jobs, improve the textile industry, and make things more affordable. He looked for gaps in the market and tried to fill them. As MBA students, this is a core learning for us: understand the market and find solutions.

 3. Marketing is More Than Just Selling Guru was a great marketer without any formal training. He convinced investors, customers, and even politicians with his words and actions. He knew how to build trust and create a strong brand. This shows us how important communication and storytelling are in business.

 4. Rules vs. Results One of the biggest debates in the movie was: is it okay to break rules if your goal is growth? Guru did break rules at times to move ahead faster. This made me think about ethics in business. As future managers, we will face similar situations, and we’ll need to choose between shortcuts and doing the right thing.

5. Take Criticism as a Challenge Many people doubted Guru and tried to bring him down. But instead of quitting, he worked harder. His speech in the courtroom in the end really hit me—it showed how he turned every challenge into an opportunity.

 6. Support System Matters Guru’s wife, Sujata (played by Aishwarya Rai), stood by him during every up and down. It made me realize how important it is to have people who support you emotionally when you're working hard to build something big.

 Final Thoughts

Guru is more than just a film—it’s a lesson in entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, and personal growth. It taught me that success is not just about talent, but also about courage, smart thinking, and never giving up. As an MBA student, this movie made me feel more connected to the business world—not just through books and theory, but through real human struggles and ambition.
